Dying Light

'Dying Light' is the second novel in the Logan McRae series by Scottish crime writer Stuart MacBride. When reading a novel by MacBride, you will not be reading a happy, light tale but rather a dark, twisted, gritty story of crime and murder in Aberdeen - the murder capital of the world according to one of the characters.
I can't help but enjoy the tales though and MacRae is clearly his own worst enemy. He will always strive to do 'the right thing' - an admirable trait - and always finds himself in the middle of the firing line as a result. This time around, MacRae is facing disclipinary action and has been assigned to the 'Screwup Squad' run by the decidedly uncharming DI Steel. Someone is wandering the streets of Aberdeen and killing women working on the streets, meanwhile a arsonist is on the loose and setting deadly fires. Steel has decided to use the presence of MacRae on her squad as an opportunity for both of them to escape their team of no hopers and with Steel willing to use anyone or anything to achieve for her aims, trouble is brewing.
Despite the darkness of the novel there are moments of absolute hilarity, many provided by the difficult to like Steel as she blunders around and treats everyone with intense dislike.
A dark read for the most part but enjoyable.
